Some time ago we were contacted by Gary Aspden, who made the adidas Special series possible and who himself big collector. He informed us that an adidas ZX exhibition should take place in London under the slogan: “ZX – Roots of Running”. Thematically, this exhibition is dedicated to the ZX family and, as many ZX enthusiasts know, 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the glorious 1.000 Series. As expected, the hope of the scene regarding the products is high! At Gary’s request, we at Overkill also provided a pair of our treasures (ZX 1000 – 9020). With our expertise and the loans

we have contributed we helped to make the exhibition a complete success. Yesterday was the day! In London, in the middle of Camden, the “ZX – Roots of Running” exhibition took place and we were fortunately there. Together with many responsible persons from the adidas Consortium Team and other well-known stores like Shelflife, Hanon, Endclothing, SNS, Footpatrol etc. we gathered for dinner before the event. In the midst of the familiar atmosphere, the first surprises reached us and as a small gift we got the book of the exhibition and the retro version of this year’s adidas ZX

4000 OG´s, which will be available on 08.12.18 from Overkill as a gift. A very special guest at the dinner was Jacques Chassaing, one of the fathers of the ZX series. As a “creator”, he was significantly involved in the development of the complete ZX series, as he later told us at a talk. A meeting with him is a very special moment for every fan, as it is for us. The first thing we did was get the books and shoes signed by him and felt honored to spend the evening with him and get some background information. After dinner we went straight to the exhibition and we were curious to see what would await us. There were about 300-400 different ZX models from the past days from the 100 to the 1.000 ZX series. From very limited collabs to rare samples there was a lot to see for us as ZX fanatics. In addition there were already first insights of coming Consortium projects for spring/summer 2019. For example the ZX 4000 of Shelflife from South Africa which was impressing particularly by its materials and where African roots are reflected in the design. Or the ZX 500 RM from Commonwealth (L.A. & Philipines) and a ZX 500 RM from HenderScheme. Our personal highlight of the event was the ZX 10.000 C. Yes you read correctly, adidas has added another model to the 1.000 ZX Family. The ZX 10.000 C is a completely new silhouette and it is full of anticipation and hope for what could follow. The first OG version of a Consortium Drop was exhibited on site.

The materials and details are strongly reminiscent of ZX DNA of past days, the vintage look which can be traced back to the choice of materials and colours is reminiscent of the look of that time. It’s clear to see that the designers in the background have done a lot of work in the implementation and have dealt intensively with the history of the ZX Famliy. We can not speak of a random product here! The special thing about this model is the Midsole Unit, the 1991 EQT Cushion, which will certainly be a topic of conversation. If you are interested in the history of this model, you will surely be able to understand the connections. In any case, we are positively surprised and see a lot of potential on this silhouette. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the designers involved in the creation of this new model, a new milestone in the history of the ZX series. We can only express our congratulations and admire and endorse the good final result. We’ve already had a look behind the scenes and can only confirm that we’ve been working on the product with passion for the ZX Series. From our point of view the implementation is a clear gain of the ZX series. The book about the exhibition is a documentation of the shoes that were also exhibited on site. This very limited book is only available at the event location, exclusively for the duration of the exhibition (10 days). The price was almost 25€ and the proceeds will be donated completely to the Teenage Cancer Trust, which is of course a great campaign which we supported with a big purchase. We also had our books signed directly by Gary Aspden, Jacques Chassaing and Robert Brooksy, who was also there.

It was these people who held a panel discussion about the history of ZX in the evening. Jacques in particular gave deep insights into the processes of creation of the ZX series in the 80s – 90s.  It was very exciting to find out how everything started and how everything changed in relation to today’s time. Questions from the audience were also welcome, so Jacques revealed the secret of his favourite ZX models from the 100 series (ZX 500) and the 1,000 series (ZX 8000 C). The ZX 500 in particular has a high status because it was the first ZX model in 1984. At that time, he was directly involved as a designer or, as he called it, rather as an inventor. Then the evening was about tasty drinks and good music and many ZX lovers right in the middle. Many photos were taken, new contacts were made and everyone admired and discussed the variety of shoes. It was a very pleasant atmosphere and a great event at all. We think there is a need for more of these events, especially to give the younger generations an insight into the ZX series. We hope at this point that adidas recognizes the great potential of this model series and that we can expect more ZX products in the near future. A start has been made, thanks to the adidas Consortium Team. At this point a “huge thank you” for the organisation and to all the designers in the background. Hats off from Team Overkill for your hard work, we are fans of you and look forward to more projects. One thing may remain mentioned, it remains exciting!
