“THEY TRIED BUT THEY CAN’T KILL THE PACE” fasst den Schädel ein. THEY TRIED BUT THEY CAN’T KILL THE PACE” in schwarz eingestickt. THEY TRIED BUT THEY CAN’T KILL THE PACE”.

I see it as a testimony of our work and I knew right away that this constellation is unique. I would also like to touch on the process of working together. Pacemaker stands for an open, creative and pragmatic approach. In this case we managed everything via WhatsApp. It was quite obvious that everyone trusted each other. When we started to work on the design I was getting super excited. At the same time a bit nervous because the Pacemaker Identity put the considered and sophisticated EDWIN aesthetic into the rough Pace context. The feedback from Sam and Dean (EDWIN Menswear Designer) was just, “well it looks sick”. The trust we have felt is something priceless, something you need to earn in years and years of hard work!”

Questioner: Hi Both, thank you for taking the time to talk about your latest Project. Please introduce yourself!

Till Jagla: Konnichiwa Pacemakers, my name is Till Jagla and I am the Founder and Owner of “Pacemaker”. Pacemaker is more than just a brand, it’s a mindset! People also know me as “eartothestreet”, my Instagram pseudonym. Since 2010 I have been keeping myself busy by creating footwear concepts for adidas, before that I did the same for New Balance. I’ve lived and breathed Streetwear for as long as I can remember!

Sam Bloor: I’m Sam, Marketing Manager here at EDWIN. I’ve been part of the Work in Progress family for a long time now, working across a variety of projects from digital content to eCom, right through to events and collaborations.
Till first popped up on my radar back in 2014 when I was working on the social media side of things, @eartothestreet was a daily destination to see what denim Till had paired with the latest Sneaker release!! Since then we have been in regular contact for one thing or another and it’s good to finally work with him and the rest of the Pacemaker crew.

Questioner: We know, you have worked on the next big thing over the last months. Please tell us more about it. What can we expect?

Till Jagla: The last Pace drops have been exciting and the response from the Pacemakers out there was nothing short of overwhelming. As you know, Pace never stands still, in our world standing still means moving backwards and we don’t like that. Hence I was looking for a collab partner that has the power, authenticity and credibility to open a new product dimension for Pacemaker. To answer your question, you can expect the next level of “United Pace” – The perfect merge between Japanese Craftsmanship and European Street Culture!

Sam Bloor: When we work on a project like this, we don’t like to stifle creativity and we like to give a certain freedom to whoever we collaborate with. Pacemaker was no different, we wanted them to use EDWIN products as a blank canvas and give them the freedom to stamp their own style on things.

Questioner: Please tell us more how such a collaboration comes to life.

Till Jagla: Well, I guess there is no generic recipe for collaborations. It’s important to talk about expectations right in the beginning to be aligned on the outcome. Nowadays, the problem with collaborations is that brands overuse the term “collaboration”. Marketers just use it as part of their marketing mix, without knowing anything about the cooperative mechanism. I see many good projects, but unfortunately more projects that feel forced and too corporate. For me it’s about a Win-Win situation. Both brands need to contribute something special to the product, which ideally leads to a result one brand couldn’t do on their own. I am glad and honored that EDWIN offered us the opportunity to get access to their quality that is based on their experience in making Denim. As many people know I have loved the brand for years, if not decades. If you ask me, EDWIN entered the Sneaker Universe in the smartest way. Their Rainbow Selvage is probably the best and most recognizable Selvage you could have worn in times of Pin Rolling.

Sam Bloor: Here at EDWIN we’re constantly on the lookout for likeminded individuals from all walks of life, whether they are musicians, illustrators, tattooists, restauranteurs, photographers or even sneakerheads. Having said that, it always has to be a natural fit for both parties with a mutual appreciation, it’s not something we like to force.

Questioner: Please give us some more insights about the product. What do you want to emphasize?

Till Jagla: The silhouettes I have picked belong to my favorite styles. The High Road Jacket is just classy, the boxy fit makes it so timeless. The same counts for the ED-80, the fit is just perfect! What I like most is the masculine Pace slogans and graphics feel so right on the Denim pieces. The direction reminds me of the successful “Hide and Seek” Drop. My favorite elements are the Pace-Rabbit-Skull and all the great details you will find in the products.

Questioner: I see the spark in your eyes, talking about the partnership. What made the collaboration so special for you guys?

Till Jagla: First of all its great to finally officially work with Sam and the EDWIN Crew. I can’t say it often enough. I feel privileged and honored that EDWIN from Japan has chosen us. The trust we have felt is something priceless, something you need to earn in years and years of hard work!

Sam Bloor: Some projects can feel like hard work, but not this one. Working with the Pacemaker team, we’ve been able to create some amazing product thanks to the vision that Till had for the capsule collection, right from the start. Each step of the process has been relatively stress free, developing a set of items that blends our denim DNA with the Pacemaker mindset. Something that we couldn’t have created without them.

Questioner: Till, Pacemaker has been a true success story so far. Pacemaker worked already with many big names, EDWIN, New Era, Victorinox, SIGG, to name a few and you mentioned it before, standing still, is moving backwards. What’s next?

Till Jagla: Well, first I would like to celebrate the EDWIN Project with my team. This wouldn’t have been possible without my partners in crime. A special thanks goes to my friend and design machine Wörn Dauerfeuer, Sascha – The Moldernway, Weezy Wiessner and the “frtwty.corp” but also to all the team members who contributed to this project. I have some new special projects in the works and as always, my motivation is to give other Pacemakers the opportunity to bring their dreams to life. You can expect the unexpected.

Questioner: Sam, what would you like to say to finish up the interview?

Sam Bloor: When Till said earlier that he keeps himself busy, he really wasn’t joking, I’ve witnessed it first hand over the last 12 months. It’s working with people like Till that keeps our jobs interesting, tapping into different subcultures and introducing the brand to new audiences along the way.
